Code: REA-438 NC NQT Training - The Palmer Academy Hub

ETSA have worked with partners from across REAch2 to update the Newly Qualified Teacher (NQT) Programme and bring it in line with current practices and expectations. The NQT Programme is designed to support the first step of a teacher’s developmental journey and is underpinned by the REAch2 Touchstones to deliver our aim of ‘exceptional opportunities for learning’. It is a valuable opportunity for NQTs to discuss their practice with peers and experienced professionals, and to find valuable space for reflection. Each session focuses on developing teachers’ knowledge of a particular curriculum area or aspect of pedagogy; it is in the integration of developing understanding of practice, pedagogy and seeing it in action that defines the programme.

Code: REA-539 Time to be; time to lead: Exploring the inner world of our leadership insight events

Facilitated by Cathie Paine, Deputy CEO of REAch2 and qualified mindfulness trainer and Maggie Farrar,* these three leadership insight events we will explore how we can strengthen and cultivate greater awareness, clarity, creativity and compassion in our leadership.

Drawing on the theory and practice of mindfulness, these sessions will build our ability to stay attentive, present and focused, exploring how to handle day to day stress and uncertainty whilst working with inner self judgment and doubt.

Their key aim is to examine our work as leaders in Reach2, strengthening our ability to respond skilfully to complexity and challenge. They will explore the practice of finding joy and gratitude in our daily work and look at what it means to be a whole-hearted leader, embodying the best of who we can be so we can better serve the children in our care - day by day, moment by moment.

There will be the opportunity to follow up each event with on-going guidance for personal practice and you can choose to attend one or all three events.

Target Audience: All Headteachers and central team leaders in REAch2

Attendees: teachers and leaders working in Years 2 and 6.

Work samples to bring:

Please bring Writing books (and portfolios if used) of children working in Year 2 and 6. We recommend 1 secure at Expected Standard and 1 secure at Greater Depth for comparison, and then as many examples of children working on the cusp of those judgements as you would like moderation evidence and recommendations for. The more examples you bring, the more valuable the process will be for you and your colleagues. We will attempt to spend as much time moderating as possible.

Please also bring your own copies of the Teacher Assessment Framework and exemplification materials - attached for you to print.

Should you have any queries, please do not hesitate to contact Gayle or one of the ASLs. Thank you for your continued support and we look forward to seeing your staff at the Regional Moderation.

Code: REA-459 National Professional Qualification for Headship (NPQH)

The Programme: The main focus of this programme is to ensure all participants increase their confidence and capability in the core skills and responsibilities of an effective school leader. The course will empower participants to develop a strong network to support them as Headteachers.

Participants are assessed through a written assignment to ensure that they have reached the qualification requirements, plus a viva interview to assess them against the more challenging Ambition bar.

The programme comprises a series of training sessions, along with pre- and post-reading, a nine-day school placement and an in-school impact project.

The sessions cover six core areas:

  • Leadership skills for Headteachers
  • School self-evaluation and school improvement planning
  • School culture and vision
  • Operational management of a school including finance and HR
  • Teaching, learning and curriculum
  • Pastoral leadership

In order for both aspiring and serving Headteachers to receive their qualification, they will need to complete the project element of this qualification successfully. This is in two parts:

  • Lead a change programme at whole-school level, lasting at least two terms, to improve pupil progress and attainment. They will need to present the plan to their LGB prior to implementation and gather their feedback.
  • Undertake a placement in a contrasting school (for example, by performance, pupil profile, geography), lasting at least nine working days.

Therefore it is essential that the school understands the level of support they will need to put in place when they are placing participants on the programme.
